The recycling process

Remove hazardous contents
key step that occurs early in the recycling process is the removal of hazardous chemicals. Fluids like antifreeze, oils, brake fluids, gasoline and even mercury cause serious damage if they reach soil or draining systems. To ensure safety, these fluids are removed early in the process.

Removal of complex parts
Parts containing various materials are manually removed from the car and separated by material type. This maximizes the percentage of the car that can be recycled. Parts are also assessed for re-use, this is the most environmental option as it requires the least embodied energy.

Compacting the metal frame
The final step at the vehicle recycling plant is compacting the remaining metal components of the vehicle. This step allows more vehicles to be transported per trip reducing fuel consumption during the recycling process.

Transport to recycling facility
Finally the compacted metal frames are transported to local metal recycling centers. Here the materials can be reclaimed for use in many products from cans to new cars. External metal recycling plants are utilized as their as best equipped to make the best use of recyclable metals.
